The 1853-O is a much scarcer date than the 1851-O and 1852-O and it is a harder issue to find in terms of overall rarity than the 1850-O. Despite its relative scarcity, the 1853-O is still affordable in collector grades.
This slightly prooflike example shows nice light green-gold color and is less extensively abraded than usual for the issue. The detail and remaining luster suggest an AU50 grade and if there were just a few less ticks on the obverse it may well have been graded as such. A small grease stain on the obverse between stars nine and ten is mint-made and doesn’t remove the overall eye appeal.
The last two EF45 auction records are both for $6,900. One coin was graded by PCGS and had CAC approval (it was sold in 2011) while the other was graded by PCGS and wasn’t approved by CAC (it was sold in 2010).
This is just about the finest available quality for the date at less than $7,500 and nice 1853-O double eagles are becoming harder and harder to locate.
