The 1853 is a scarcer date than either the 1851 or 1852 double eagles in spite of selling for virtually no premium in circulated grades. It is not scarce in AU58 but properly graded examples are not seen with the degree of regularity which they were a few years ago. This date is very scarce in all Uncirculated grades and very rare in MS62 or higher.
This lustrous slider has a slight amount of friction on the cheek of Liberty but it appears to have no significant wear. It is bright yellow-gold in hue with excellent detail and just a few small ticks on the obverse.
The last two non-CAC NGC AU58 examples of the 1853 double eagle to sell at auction both brought $3,819 in 2012.
