Repunched Date. FS-301. Early die state with all four digits showing clear repunching at their tops.
This example is lightly worn and lustrous with pleasing pale yellow-gold color. Unlike most 1852 double eagles (either normal date or repunched date), this piece shows very choice fields with only minor marks visible to the naked eye.
In my experience, fewer than 10% of all 1852 double eagles are of this variety and the 1852 repunched date becomes very scarce in the higher AU grades. In Uncirculated, it is very rare and I am aware of no more than four or five with none better than MS61. It is most often seen in the EF40 to AU50 range and almost never with good eye appeal. I have not personally handled a finer 1852 repunched date double eagle this year.
Please note that the PCGS population of just two in this grade with three finer is misleading due to the fact that PCGS hasn’t recognized this variety for more than a year or so; it is likely to increase and become more in line with NGC’s current population of 16 in AU55 with 10 finer.
An important coin for the advanced collector of Type One Liberty Head double eagles
