Double Date variety; FS-301. Designated by NGC.

This variety is the result of the original date punch being too high; it was corrected but the result is easily visible to the naked eye and it rates as one of the more spectacular varieties in the entire Liberty Head double eagle series. The 1852/1852 is scarce in all grades and rare in AU55 and above. The best I have personally seen is an NGC MS61 which sold for $11,163 as Heritage 2/13: 4943.

This choice coin is high end for the grade and it is notable for possessing pleasing natural green-gold and medium orange hues with darker highlights. The surfaces are very clean with no detracting marks. This variety tends to be found with dipped, highly scuffed surfaces.

As a normal date 1852 $20 in AU55 with CAC approval, this date is worth in the $3,250-3,500 range. For a small premium, here is an opportunity to own one of the nicer examples of this important and increasingly in-demand variety.

For the date, CAC has approved 14 in AU55 with 27 finer.
