The 1852 is one of the more common Type One double eagles from the Philadelphia mint but it is not easy to find in AU58, especially with natural color and surfaces. Most have been dipped or processed and nearly all examples have been roughly handled at one time.

This gem “slider” has a great look for the grade with lovely rich natural green-gold color and a much frostier texture than usual for the date; many 1852 double eagles show soft, satiny luster. There is just a trace of wear visible on the high spots and a few small ticks in the fields, especially on the obverse. Both sides have uncommon squared edges with partial wire rims and great detail, suggestive of a coin which was an early strike from this die pair.

I recently sold a PCGS MS61 example of this date with CAC approval for more than double the price of what I am asking for this example and, to be honest, I think I like the AU58 better and certainly feel it is a great value for the collector of Type Ones.

CAC has approved 14 in this grade with 13 higher.
