Along with the 1852, this is the most available Type One double eagle from the Philadelphia mint. It is sometimes available in the higher AU grades but most examples graded 55 or 58 have been dipped and display negative eye appeal. CAC-quality 1851 double eagles in this range are hard to find.
This piece has no real wear but it is accurately graded AU55 due to slightly choppy surfaces. It shows pleasing medium orange-gold color with a slightly richer hue on the reverse. The obverse fields show some bagmarks and there is a scrape through the 8 in the date.
The last PCGS/CAC AU55 1851 double eagle to sell at auction was Heritage 1/12: 6624 which realized $3,220.
CAC has approved six in this grade with 13 finer.
