SUPERB CHOICE AU 1851-O DOUBLE EAGLE
This 1851-O is along with the 1852-O, the only relatively affordable–and available–New Orleans double eagles. While viewed strictly from the number graded, the 1851-O isn’t “rare” in AU53 but most of the coins in said holders are low end and are either abraded or processed; or both. Properly graded AU53 examples are actually rare and are seldom available as they tend to enter long-term collections.
This exceptional example has the naked-eye appearance of at least an AU55 and I have seen many inferior pieces in 58 holders. It has remarkably smooth surfaces overlaid with lovely natural green-gold and medium orange hues which are similar on both sides. The strike is razor sharp with very strong definition at the centers and the overall eye appeal is just exceptional for the grade.
Only two PCGS AU53 1851-O double eagles have sold at auction since August 2011 and both, ironically, were approved by CAC. One brought $8,813 as Heritage 4/15: 6381 while the other realized $9,400. The coin I offer here is considerably nicer than these other two pieces.
If you have been looking for a truly special Type One double eagle from New Orleans which won’t break the bank, you are not likely to find many other coins which could compare with this wonderful 1851-O.
