CHOICE EF 1851-O DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1851-O is, along with the 1852-O, the most available New Orleans double eagle which makes it popular as a type coin. It is often seen in the Extremely Fine grades but most pieces in 40 and 45 holders are bright and unappealing. Just a small percentage are likely to acquire CAC approval if submitted.
This choice coin is fresh-to-the-market and is from the same source as the 1850-O in NGC 45 listed directly above. It is well struck for the issue and lightly marked with rich russet color accentuated by flashes of golden-orange in the protected areas. Unlike most New Orleans double eagles graded as such, this is an EF45 with a good deal of remaining luster and the eye appeal is far above average.
This date appears regularly at auction in EF45 but almost never with CAC approval. The last two NGC examples to cross the block sold for $4,700 and $4,935 in Heritage’s 4/16 sale.
This is the best available quality for this date in the $5,000-6,000 range.
CAC has approved 19 in this grade with 46 finer.
