The 1851 is among the most available non-shipwreck dates in the Type One double eagle series. It is common in all circulated grades but it is very scarce in the lower Uncirculated range and it becomes rare (and expensive) in MS62 and above.
I recently purchasded this coin from a savvy wholesaler who attempted–repeatedly– to get it into an MS62 holder and I can see his point–and his persistence. It has a fresh fresh appearance on account of its nice natural light green-gold color and its rich, frosty luster. The surfaces are very clean for the date and the grade with just a few shallow scuffs in the fields and the appearance is excellent with a freshness and vibrancy.
There were four APR’s for the 1851 $20 in this grade in 2011 (none in 2012). Three were for $8,625 and one was for $9,200.
This is a great coin for the Type One collector who wants to own a crisp, wholesome 1851 but who doesn’t want to spend the $13,000-15,000 that it will require to buy an MS62 example.
