The 1850 is numismatically significant as the first regular issue Liberty Head double eagle from this mint. It is common in circulated grades and available, on occasion, in MS60 to MS61 but properly graded MS62 and finer examples are rare and in great demand.
This is a coin with terrific visual appeal. It is satiny in texture (many 1850 double eagles have a more frosty appearance) with superb rich yellow-gold and green color accentuated by underlying reddish-gold flashes. In terms of appearance, I think this coin blows away other 1850 double eagles which I have seen in MS63 holders and it would clearly grade as such were it not for a few light lines in the left obverse field and a small, shallow nick in the throat of Liberty.
There have been four auction appearances of MS62 1850 double eagles between September 2010 and the present with prices ranging from a low of $31,050 to a high of $34,500. No MS62+ has ever sold at auction. The last MS63 was an NGC coin which brought $43,125 as Heritage 12/09: 1852; it was not nearly as choice and original as the current example.
This is a simply stunning coin which should be of considerable importance to Liberty Head double eagle collectors, first-year-of-issue specialists or individuals who just like really cool items.
This is the highest grade 1850 double eagle to have been approved by CAC.
