The 1850 is a popular first-year-of-issue whose demand transcends the Type One double eagle market. It is common in circulated grades but locating crusty, original examples has become harder over the years as so many have been dipped or processed.
This is one of the most original 1850 double eagles which I have seen and it shows very rich green-gold color with contrasting deeper highlights. There is a good amount of luster for the grade and enough detail to strongly suggest an AU50 grade. I can guarantee you that this coin has never been cleaned or “improved” and it has really nice overall eye appeal.
The last PCGS EF 45 1850 double eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction was Heritage 9/12: 5048 which realized $3,819. That coin, while nice, was not as original or nicely toned as the present example.
A lovely 1850 double eagle and an issue which, as I said above, is in strong demand.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with 42 higher.
