SHARPLY STRUCK 1848-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 20-L.

The lightly-regarded 1848-D is actually the eighth scarcest of 26 Dahlonega half eagles. While it is sometimes seen in the AU50 to AU55 range, at least 75% of these coins are poorly struck. Sharply struck 1848-D half eagles are rare.

This deep yellow-gold example is uncommonly well struck for the issue with no die lapping, clashmarks or central weakness. The surfaces are a bit dull--likely from an old cleaning--but this piece has the detail of an AU55 to AU58.

Only two PCGS AU53 1848-D half eagles have sold at auction since 2012 and the last one to cross the block brought $3,738 as Stacks Bowers 2012 ANA: 12359.
