ATTRACTIVE AND HISTORIC 1860 CLARK GRUBER $5, PCGS/CAC MS61

Kagin-2, R-4.

For a short duration, the Denver firm of Clark, Gruber and Co. produced gold coinage for the burgeoning economy of the new state of Colorado. The half eagles dated 1860 mimic the Federal issues and are popular with collector of US half eagles of this era.

When available in higher grades, this issue tends to come softly struck, abraded and bright. This piece has clearly never been lightened as it shows natural green-gold color with some amber tinges. The strike is typical for the issue but the surfaces are frosty and uncommonly free of marks. The eye appeal is excellent.

The only other CAC approved PCGS MS61 example of this issue sold for $16,450 as Heritage 2014 FUN: 7431.

CAC has approved just 2 in MS61 with 7 finer.
