GEM SLIDER 1881-CC HALF EAGLE

The 1881-CC is the rarest Carson City half eagle struck after 1878. There are an estimated 100-125 known with most grading EF45 and lower. This date becomes very scarce in properly graded AU55 and above and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with just three or four known including a remarkable PCGS MS65 gem.

This coin was recently found in Europe and it is the single nicest 1881-CC half eagle I have offered in some time. It has no real wear but there is just enough bag friction to keep it from the Uncirculated range. It shows near-full satiny luster below soft russet and rose coloration with extremely clean surfaces.

A nice CAC approved PCGS AU58 example of this date sold for $12,925 as Lot 3366 in the Heritage July 2013 auction. Only two PCGS AU58's in total have sold since August 2012.

As this date is essentially unavailable in Uncirculated, this very nice AU58 is likely the best available to the serious Carson City half eagle collector.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 2 finer.
