RARE HIGH GRADE 1877-CC HALF EAGLE
In terms of overall rarity, the 1877-CC is comparable to the 1872-CC and it is harder to locate than the 1871-CC, 1874-CC and the 1875-CC. There are an estimated 125 known and most fall into the VF-EF range. In properly graded AU55, this issue is quite rare and there are just two or three in Uncirculated, the finest of which is a single PCGS MS62.
This fresh-to-the-market is the highest graded 1877-CC half eagle I have offered since a PCGS AU58 I sold in 2012. The surfaces are bright and frosty with enough body to suggest a 58 grade but with a few too many appreciable marks to get there. The color is a rich straw-gold hue with one area of deeper hue on the reverse at the olive leaves.
A PCGS AU55 last sold at auction for $17,250 as Stacks Bowers 2016 ANA: 3264; this coin was CAC approved but it was not choice. Two NGC AU's have also sold in 2016; one brought $18,932 in September while the other realized $20,563 in October.
This date is essentially unavailable finer than this and if you are putting together a serious set of Carson City half eagles, you should give this coin serious consideration.
