RARE PCGS AU53 1876-CC HALF EAGLE

Only 6,867 examples of this date were made and today around 100 or so are known with most in the VF-EF range. Properly graded AU 1876-CC half eagles are rare and this date is unique in Uncirculated with the sole piece known grading MS66(!) at PCGS.

This fresh-to-the-market piece is choice and crusty which is a welcome exception to the typical 1876-CC which is bright and abraded. The color is a nice russet and green-gold hue with some brighter orange-gold at the obverse border. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are uncommonly free of marks.

No PCGS AU53 has sold since Stacks 1/07: 5184 which sold for a strong $17,825. An NGC AU55, which in my opinion was not as nice as the current PCGS AU53, sold for $14,100 as Heritage 1/14: 6738.

This is the second finest 1876-CC I have handled in some time (I recently sold a PCGS AU58) and it will fit nicely into a high-quality set of CC half eagles.
