RARE PCGS AU58 1858-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 43-II; reverse of 1859.

The 1858-D is a conditionally scarce issue which is typically seen in EF40 to AU53 grades. Properly graded AU58 examples are very scarce and those with natural color and choice surfaces are extremely hard to locate.

This date is typically seen with poor peripheral details and bright, abraded surfaces; two things which this coin lacks. It is exceptionally well struck with bold borders and the surfaces are clean and wholesome. Both sides show nice natural color with even russet colors which change to orange-gold in the recesses.

A nice NGC AU58 brought $4,935 as Heritage 4/15: 6216.

This is one of the few surviving 1858-D half eagles with this degree of natural color and it is very desirable as such.
