GEM SLIDER PCGS/CAC AU58 1858-C HALF EAGLE
The 1858-C is among the more available Charlotte half eagles from the standpoint of overall availability. But it is rare in properly graded AU58 and the few Uncirculated pieces known tend to scuffy and unoriginal.
This totally fresh-to-the-market example has the appearance of a Choice Uncirculated with virtually mark-free surfaces, soft luster and bold details. The color is a natural green-gold and the appearance is far above-average for the grade.
No CAC approved AU58 1858-C half eagle has appeared at auction. In the Heritage September 2016 sale, two AU58 appeared; the PCGS version realized $7,638 while the NGC coin brought $7,050. Neither was as choice as the present example, in my opinion.
This is the perfect coin for the type collector seekinng a single high grade half eagle from this mint.
CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 3 finer.
