ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1857-O HALF EAGLES

The numismatically significant 1857-O is the final No Motto half eagle from New Orleans and it is a scarce coin in all grades with fewer than 100 known from the mintage of 13,000. I am aware of exactly three in Uncirculated (one each in MS61, MS62 and MS63) and this fresh AU58+ is likely the fourth finest known.

Exceptionally well struck and mostly reflective, this golden-orange example shows no wear and has the naked eye appearance of an MS63. There are a few ticks in the left obverse field and a small, shallow mark on Liberty's throat.

A PCGS AU58 has not sold at auction since 2006 and only two have crossed the block since 2003.

The three Uncirculated 1857-O half eagles mentioned above are all impounded in tightly-held collections and this remarkable AU58+ could well be the best available piece for many years.
