The 1857-D is an overlooked date which I rank as the seventh rarest of 26 Dahlonega half eagles in terms of overall rarity. As its low CAC population proves, it is an appearance rarity as well with only a small percentage of the survivors not scrubbed beyond recognition.
This choice, evenly worn example has impressively clean surfaces with some luster remaining beneath medium russet coloration.
Only one PCGS EF45 1857-D half eagle has appeared at auction since October 2006 and the present example brought $2,938 as Heritage 1/17: 6794.
Excellent value at under $3,000.
CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 6 finer.
