CHOICE AU 1845-D HALF EAGLE IN AN OLD NGC "FATTY" HOLDER
Variety 13-H; date far to the left.
Housed in an old NGC "fatty" holder and, in my opinion, grading at least a full AU55 if not AU58 by today's standards.
The 1845-D is a common issue within the Dahlonega series which becomes scarce in the higher AU grades, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This piece was graded many years ago and it is notable for its excellent natural orange-gold color with slightly reddish undertones at the lower obverse and on much of the reverse. The strike is excellent, the surfaces are free of any majorly detracting marks and there is luster galore on both sides.
Nice AU55 examples of this date regularly sell for $3,500-4,000 at auction while AU58's, when available can bring in excess of $6,000.
I am somewhat baffled that this coin didn't merit a coveted gold sticker at CAC as it is clearly well undergraded.
CAC has approved 2 in AU50 with 11 finer.
Ex Heritage 9/16: 13666 where it sold (without a CAC sticker) for $4,935.
