COLLECTOR GRADE 1839-D HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Variety 1-B.

The 1839-D is a distinctive one-year type and it is the only Liberty Head Dahlonega half eagle with the mintmark placed on the obverse. Affordable yet appealing lower grade examples are in demand and not often available.

This well-traveled example could more rightfully called "VF20 obverse/F12 reverse" as the front is well-defined while the reverse border is weak from 10:00 to 1:00. There are no scratches or detracting marks and the overall look is wholesome and original.

Another PCGS F15 1839-D half eagle, this with stunning color, sold for $1,955 back in the Goldberg 2/05 auction. An unappealing PCGS VF20 brought $2,585 as Stacks Bowers 7/13: 5163.

Where can you find another CAC approved 1839-D half eagle for less than $3,000?

CAC has approved two in this grade with 11 finer.
