POPULAR COLLECTOR GRADE 1838-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 1-A.

The 1838-D is a numismatically significant issue as the first half eagle from this mint as well as for being a one-year type. This not a rare date by the standards of the series but attractive, affordable examples are always exceeded by demand.

Unlike most 1838-D half eagles in this grade range, this coin isnt a "no grade" which has been sloppily "net graded" into a regular holder. It shows extensive but even wear with a hint of luster remaining beneath rich natural russet color. The surfaces are fairly clean overall although there are a few non-detracting toning spots on the obverse.

Only two PCGS VF35 1838-D half eagles have appeared at auction since May 2007; both realized $5,875, one in 2013 and the other in 2016.

This is a pleasing, affordable example of a truly popular issue with multiple levels of demand.
