POPULAR CIVIL WAR ISSUE 1864 THREE DOLLAR WITH CAC APPROVAL

Only 2,630 examples of this date were made and the 1864 three dollar is popular as a historic Civil War issue. It is not often seen in the mid-AU grades with natural color and choice surfaces.

This piece is housed in an older blue-label holder and I grade it a solid AU55 by today's standards. It is undipped and lustrous with nice natural green-gold color accentuated by flashes of rose and orange in the protected areas. The surfaces are extremely clean and the typically-seen clashmarks and striations are absent.

The only other PCGS/CAC AU53 1864 three dollars to sell at auction is this exact coin which brought $5,170 as Lot 14084 in the March 2016 Stacks Bowers event.

An attractive example, sensibly priced and suitable for a variety of collections.

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 16 finer.
