PCGS AU58 1854-O THREE DOLLARS

Variety 1.

The 1854-O is a popular one-year type. It is far less rare than its counterpart the 1854-D but it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with no more than five or six known. The rarity of this issue in properly graded AU58 is compromised by extremely high population figures (94 in NGC 58....?!?!?!) but real sliders are very scarce.

This light green-gold example shows very little actual wear but there is some friction in the obverse fields. The surfaces are clean and the planchet is better quality than normal with the exception of a shallow flake between the base of the O in DOLLARS and the top loop of the 8.

The last non-CAC PCGS AU58 1854-O Three Dollars to sell at auction realized $16,450 as Heritage 4/15: 5283.

If you can even find an Uncirculated 1854-O in a PCGS holder, it will cost you in excess of $40,000-50,000 and I think most collectors would regard this as an overbuy.
