BORDERLINE GEM 1832 QUARTER

B-2, R-2.

As with all of the dates in the short-lived Small Sized Bust quarter type, the 1832 is not often seen above MS63 and gems are rare.

This piece is notable for its attractive natural toning. The obverse shows reddish-gold peripheral hues below deep, dusky lilac-grey while the reverse tends more towards greens and reds at the border. The strike is very sharp and a good deal of luster is plainly visible. A few small ticks on the portrait limit the grade but this is one of the nicer 1832 quarters which I have seen.

Only one PCGS MS64 1832 quarter has sold at auction since 2009 and it realized $6,325 as Stacks Bowers 8/11: 10018.

Gems of this date are all but impossible to locate, making this piece desirable for the date collector who is looking for an affordable but exceptional 1832 quarter.
