RARE LOW MINTAGE 1877 QUARTER EAGLE

A paltry 1,632 business strikes were made of this issue. Survivors are more numerous than one might expect but this date is very scarce in MS62 to MS63 and almost never seen in grades higher than this.

Many 1877 quarter eagles are reflective but this piece is extremely frosty with splendid rich natural butter-gold color. The obverse is very choice and grades a full MS64 on its own while the reverse shows some clustered abrasions below STATES.

Only one PCGS MS63 1877 quarter eagle has sold at auction since 1999 and it realized $8,813 as Heritage 1/16: 6378.

This is likely in the tail end of the Condition Census for the date and it will make a great addition to a world-class set of Liberty Head quarter eagles.
