NGC/CAC AU58 1850-O QUARTER EAGLE
In higher grades, the 1850-O is more difficult to locate than the 1846-O, 1851-O and 1852-O quarter eagles. Properly graded AU58's are scarcer than the population figures might suggest and this date is genuinely rare in Uncirculated.
This "Gem Slider" shows little wear and has nice luster below even, natural russet color. The strike is slightly flat at the centers and this is typical for the issue.
The last NGC AU58 example with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $2,600 as DLRC 3/14: 961.
I have seen inferior 1850-O quarter eagles in MS61 holders and this piece represents good value for the specialist.
CAC has approved 17 in this grade with 4 finer.
