Variety 7-L.
The 1846-D is among the more available quarter eagles from this mint. It is available in the mid-AU grades but not often with natural color and choice surfaces.
This piece has an especially choice obverse for the grade with good detail and ample luster; the reverse is a bit less choice and it shows typical weakness of strike. Both sides have acquired pleasing natural orange-gold color.
A PCGS AU53 1846-D quarter eagle sold for $2,990 as Heritage 10/16: 4351. This was the first example of this date in this grade to sell at auction since 2013.
Good value at under $3,000.
