GEM 1842 PROOF HALF CENT, PCGS AND CAC
Breen-2, R-6. First Restrike.
An unknown number of half cents dated 1842 were made and this example is easily identifiable as a First Restrike by having small berries on the wreath and doubling on the T in CENT. It is believed that fewer than 20 ofthese exist.
This fully reflective Gem is well-made with choice surfaces which lack the mint-made issues which plague Proof half cents from this era. The color is a deep brown with splashes of rich turquoise and violet. While not designated as a "cameo" by PCGS the obverse device is frosted and is nicely offset by the watery fields.
A CAC approved PCGS PR66 Brown example of this issue recently sold for $15,275 as Heritage 11/16: 5116.
In my opinion, high quality Proof half cents from the 1830's and 1840's are very undervalued despite a strong collector base.
CAC has approved this 1 coin in this grade with 2 finer (both 66).
