UNDERRATED 1862-S HALF DOLLAR

WB-101, Large S mintmark.

The 1862-S is a Civil War issue which was heavily melted. It is sometimes seen in scuffy white MS60 to MS62 but properly graded MS63's are very scarce. There are likely no more than a half dozen known in MS64 and finer, the best of which is the superb PCGS MS66 Eliasberg coin which last sold for $42,300 as Heritage 5/15: 98480.

This is a typically struck example with the obverse not as sharp as the reverse. Both sides show mottled lilac and green pastel splashes with a bit more vibrancy on the reverse. Some scattered marks in the obverse fields are well hidden.

The last PCGS MS63 1862-S half dollar to sell at auction brought $2,350 as Heritage 3/14: 30041.

This coin could not be easily improved upon and it seems like good value considering its Civil War association.
