RARE BORDERLINE GEM 1861 SILVER DOLLAR; AN IMPORTANT CIVIL WAR ISSUE
While a hefty 77,500 silver dollars were coined in 1861, many of these were soon melted for recoinage into smaller denomination silver issues. Today, the 1861 silver dollar is a scarce issue which is not often seen above MS60 to MS62. There are a handful of properly graded MS64 pieces as well as four or five Gems. The finest is a single PCGS MS66 and the next best is a PCGS MS65+ which brought $50,525 in the Heritage 5/15 Gardner auction.
This fresh-to-the-market borderline Gem is unquestionably original with deep natural lilac-grey color which radiates from the centers out to the borders as original color is supposed to. The strike is sharp and the underlying surfaces are very clean with no appreciable marks or old hairlines from cleaning or mishandling. This piece has the “look” which the sophisticated collector will appreciate.

An important coin which should appeal to both Seated Dollar specialists and Civil War collectors.
