Coin Description

RARE CHOICE UNCIRCULATED 1844 SEATED DOLLAR

While easily obtainable in circulated grades, the 1844 dollar is very scarce in the lower Uncirculated grades and rare in properly graded MS63. I am aware of just two or three in MS64 and this date appears to be unique in MS65 (a PCGS coin in the Legend collection). This date is typically found dark and reflective but with limited overall eye appeal.

This sharply struck and very reflective example exhibits deep natural toning on both sides with strong contrast seen between the frosted devices and the watery fields. A few minor ticks in the fields and on Liberty’s right are limit the grade but are not deep or detracting. As on all known 1844 dollars, there is a patch of die lines on the reverse beneath the juncture of the eagle’s right wing and leg.

The last NGC MS63 1844 dollar to sell at auction was this exact coin which realized $9,400 as Heritage 2014 FUN: 4899. A PCGS MS63 with CAC approval brought $13,513 as Legend 12/14: 203.

An impressive coin and an important early date Seated Dollar for the advanced date collector.
