The 1850 is numismatically significant as the first regular issue double eagle struck at this mint. It is not as hard to find as its counterpart the 1850-O but it is extremely popular and it is one of the few Type Ones from this mint with strong multiple levels of demand. The 1850 is available in most circulated grades but it is hard to find in AU grades with natural color and surfaces.
This piece is wholly original with deep green-gold color which is offset by darker hues on the relief. If I had to guess, I’d say that this coin was stored for many years in a European bank vault where it acquired this deep, attractive color. The underlying surfaces are frosty with scattered marks which are consistent with the assigned grade.
The last three APR’s for this date, all occurring in 2013, are for PCGS examples. These brought $4,994, $5,875 (CAC) and $4,700, respectively.
