ATTRACTIVE CHOICE UNCIRCULATED 1839 CAPPED BUST HALF DOLLAR

Large Letters reverse.

The two-year type, produced in 1838 and 1839, is found in two varieties: the rare Small Letters reverse and the more common Large Letters. As a date, the 1839 is scarce in properly graded MS63 and quite rare in grades higher than this.

This is an uncommonly fresh example with deep natural two-tone golden-grey color seen in similar hues and proportions on both sides. The underlying surfaces are clean and lustrous while the strike is centrally bold but a bit weak at the borders.

The only PCGS MS63 1839 Capped Bust half dollar to sell at auction since August 2011 realized $3,760 as Stacks Bowers 2016 ANA> It was stickered by CAC but had been dipped.

This is good value for the issue and a really nice representative of the fascinating, short-lived type.
