AFFORDABLE PROOF 1906 HALF EAGLE
A total of 85 Proof half eagles were made in 1906 and as many as three-quarters of these still exist, ranging from Impaired to Gem. Most examples show little contrast as these were made in the new “all brilliant” format.
This piece saw limited circulation, most likely during a period of economic unrest when it was worth little over face value in the nascent coin market. It is obviously a Proof and it is mostly reflective with fewer marks than one might think. In fact, I have seen worse Proofs of this era in 61 holders.
There are few pertinent auction records for Impaired Proofs of this date and none with CAC approval.
