POPULAR FIRST YEAR OF ISSUE

V-4, LM-4. (R-4).

Of all the various first year of issue early types, the 1794 Flowing Hair half dime is, in my opinion, the most overlooked and undervalued. It is not rare from the standpoint of total known to exist but it is not often seen in collector grades, especially with appealing color and presentable surfaces.

This well detailed example shows a better strike than usual for the issue with a good degree of hair seen on the obverse and a majority of the feathers present on the reverse. The coloration is delightful with splashes of blue, green, yellow and red, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and the reverse. Both sides show more luster than one might expect on a coin graded VF35 and the surfaces are choice save for an old scratch between the 1 and the 7 in the date plus another less obvious one in the right obverse field.

The only recent auction record for this date in PCGS VF35 was Stacks Bowers 3/13: 1256 (at $6,463) which was a scarcer variety but which was not as choice a coin as indicted by the fact that it didn’t have CAC approval.

A perfect type coin for the collector who wants a 1794 half dime with real character.

This is the only 1794 half dime in VF35 with CAC approval; another 26 finer have been approved as well.
