The 1853-D is one of the two most available half eagles from the Dahlonega mint along with the 1854-D. There are hundreds of examples known with most of these in the EF and lower AU grades. It is not easy to find an affordable middle-range AU coin with natural color and surfaces.
This well struck piece retains a decent amount of mint luster and it shows nice medium green-gold color which deepens to a reddish-orange hue towards the borders. The strike is typical for the date with some flatness on the stars and some bevelling of the rim but the detail is still not bad for an 1853-D half eagle. There is a thin line on the obverse in the inner left field and a mark on the reverse rim at 3:00 which is mint-made.
A very nice quality coin and good value at less than $3,000.
