The 1852-D is one of the most available half eagles from this mint. This makes it popular as a type coin or a good “gateway” issue for the new collector exploring the southern gold market.
Showing a typical strike for the issue, this piece has attractive natural medium green-gold colors on the obverse and reverse. There are a moderate number of shallow abrasions I the fields which are consistent with the grade; a small scrape can be seen on the outer loops of the 8 in the date.
Since the Summer of 206, just five PCGS EF45 examples of the 1852-D half eagle have appeared at auction. Prices have ranged from a low of $1,955 to a high of $2,300.
This is a perfect introductory half eagle for the new collector becoming interested in the fascinating issues from the Dahlonega, Georgia branch mint.
