As with most of the Philadelphia No Motto half eagles from this era, the 1844 is common in circulated grades but it is scarce in the lower Uncirculated grades, rare in properly graded MS63 and virtually unavailable in MS64 and above.

This example has a fresh, frosty appearance with nice luster and pleasing orange-gold color. There are some grade-limiting scuffs seen in the fields but there is a complete lack of friction on the high spots and I feel this piece is high end for the grade.

A total of four PCGS MS62′s have sold at auction since 2005, the last in November 2011. A non-CAC NGC MS62 brought $3,966 as Heritage 2/14: 5271.

If you are looking for a fun set to collect and want to be able to obtain relatively high grade but genuinely scarce issues, you might want to consider Philadelphia No Motto half eagles.

CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer.
