Variety 11-G.

The 1844-D is comparable to the 1843-D and 1845-D in terms of high grade and overall rarity. There are an estimated 400-500 known with less than a quarter of the survivors in higher grades. This issue is scarce in properly graded AU58 and rare in Uncirculated with around a dozen known.

The obverse of this coin is outstanding and it grades a strong MS61 on its own with nearly full luster, a sharp strike and excellent fields. The reverse was lightly brushed many years ago and there are some resultant hairlines but these are shallow and not easily seen. The naked eye appearance of this coin is excellent and it is hard to imagine a more sharply detailed Dahlonega half eagle of any date.

No PCGS AU58 1844-D half eagles have sold at auction since Heritage 5/08: 22876 brought $4,888 nearly seven years ago. A nice NGC AU58 without a CAC sticker recently sold for $7,050 as Heritage 1/13: 7138.

Given the excellent appearance and very sharp details of this coin, it would make an ideal type coin for the collector looking for a single high grade half eagle from this mint.
