BD-3, R-4. Normal date variety.

The Capped Bust Left half eagle variety was produced from 1807 through 1812. With the exception of the 1808/7, all of these issues are relatively obtainable in grades up to and including MS63 which makes it an ideal set for the date collector.

This choice example is very well made; a feature not often seen on this date and variety. It shows good detail at the centers and borders with a good quality planchet that lacks adjustment marks. The obverse and reverse are toned to a medium green-gold with some deeper hues at the borders. What appear to be marks on the obverse and mostly mint-made made clashes and the reverse is very choice. The eye apeal is great and this is a most attractive piece for the date and grade.

There has not been a PCGS MS63 example of this date sold at auction since Goldberg 2/07: 2255 which realized $24,150. Five NGC MS63′s have sold at auction since the Summer of 2008 with the highest price realized being $27,830 for a non-CAC piece.

This would make an ideal coin for the collector working on a type set of early gold or, perhaps, it will become part of an important date set of Capped Bust Left half eagles.
