PCGS Lookup Number6335
WB-102, Medium S mintmark.
While common in circulated grades, this date is rare and overlooked in MS63 and higher. This is proven by the low PCGS population figures and the limited number of auction appearances in the last two decades. The finest known 1872-S half dollar, graded MS66+, recently sold for $29,375 (in an NGC MS67 holder) to a very knowledgeable wholesale specialist.
This very choice example shows natural dusky golden-grey color which is not too dark and which doesn’t obscure the strong underlying luster. The strike is bold and the surfaces show just a few small scuffs which are totally in keeping with the assigned grade.
Only one MS64 from any grading service has sold at auction since May 2006; see below.
While Civil War and earlier Seated half dollars have received considerable attention from collectors in recent years, the post-Civil War issues, with a few exceptions, are very undervalued.
Ex Stacks Bowers 8/11: 7109, where it realized $6,900.
