With a mintage of just 2,133 business strikes, the 1858 is the rarest Philadelphia issue of this format produced from the introduction of the Three Dollar denomination in 1854 up through 1865.

This clean, evenly worn example shows warm russet color with flashes of underlying orange-gold at the obverse border and the central reverse. Both sides have some dirt in the recessed areas and the detail s bold for the grade.

There has been just one auction record for an 1858 in PCGS EF45 since 2006 and that coin, ex Heritage 4/12: 6512, realized $2,645.

For collectors who are seeking a series where there is excellent value and a high “coolness” factor, the Three Dollar series currently offers considerable opportunity.
