The 1854-O is the only three dollar gold piece struck at the New Orleans mint. It is common in terms of total number known but properly graded AU55 examples are scarce and, in my opinion, the best value grade for this issue as AU58′s are very expensive.
This is an extremely solid coin for the grade with a majority of the original mint luster present below nice medium yellow and green gold colors. The strike is typical for the issue with some weakness at the centers but the fields are clean and this piece is amongst the nicer I have seen in AU55 holders.
There have been six APR’s for PCGS AU55 1854-O three dollar gold pieces since the 2011 ANA with prices ranging from a low of $5,581 to a high of $8,050.
This is one of the nicer AU55 1854-O three dollar gold pieces I have seen and it would make a perfect type coin for the savvy collector who doesn’t want to pay the $15,000-20,000 that a properly graded PCGS AU58 will cost.
