The 1887 quarter eagle is a nominally scarcer date with an original mintage of 6,160 business strikes. It is available in the lower Uncirculated grades without much effort and it becomes scarce in properly graded MS63 and higher. Only one Gem is known, a PCGS MS65, and it brought a very strong $21,850 in a September 2009 Heritage auction.
This high end example is very frosty with medium golden color showing slightly rose tendencies. As is common, a few of the stars are not completely brought up on their radial lines but the strike is sharp overall and the surfaces are quite choice for the grade.
Heritage 11/12: 4807, graded MS63 and approved by CAC, sold for $2,233 and this is the most recent comparable.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with three finer.
