45 Proofs struck. I believe that there are half of these known (most likely 20-25) and they tend to be in the PR64 to PR65 range. The mintage figure for this year is double that of 1874 and 1875 and this may be the result of the Mint striking extra coins for the Centennial celebrations in Philadelphia.
This superb Gem example has a stark black and white appearance which is the result of strong contrast between the devices and the fields. There is almost enough contrast to call this coin an Ultra Cameo. No hairlines or mint-made imperfections are visible below light magnification and the cheek is free of wear or frost breaks. A small mark in the right obverse field, between stars eleven and twelve, is hard to see with the naked eye and even under magnification are not obtrusive.
In the recent Heritage 10/12 Dallas sale, a PCGS PR65 example, approved by CAC and slabbed by PCGS prior to affixing designations for Proof gold, brought $47,000.
CAC has approved three PR65 1876 quarter eagles: one with no designation, one designated as a Cameo and one designated as a Deep Cameo.
