NICE AU58 1852-O QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1852-O quarter eagle is a common issue in the EF and lower AU grades but is becomes scarce in properly graded AU58 and it is rare in Uncirculated with around 12-15 known, mostly in MS60 to MS61. Many of the pieces graded AU58 are bright from cleaning and are not well struck.
This is a “gem slider” with the appearance of an MS61 or finer. It is well made and it appears to have not been tampered with as it shows rich natural orange-gold color over choice, lustrous surfaces. I have seen many cosmetically inferior examples in MS61 holders.
The last AU58 example with CAC approval to sell at auction was a PCGS coin which brought $1,998 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 3762.
This is excellent value at under $2,000 and it would fit well into a set of New Orleans Liberty Head quarter eagles.
CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 6 finer.
