Variety 7-K. This is the late dies state of the rare D/D variety but it does not command a premium as such.
The 1846-D is one of the more common quarter eagles from this mint and is of similar rarity to issues such as the 1845-D, 1847-D and 1849-D. It is usually found in the EF40 to AU50 but not often with natural color and surfaces.
This is a clean, evenly worn example with deep natural green-gold color and a good amount of dirt in the recesses. The surfaces are very clean and the detail is excellent with sharp centers and borders. There is some luster remaining but it is mostly concealed by the depth of the coloration.
A very pleasing example with real character and much better than average eye appeal for the grade.
