While obviously nowhere near as rare as the Philadelphia double eagles from the earlier part of this decade, the 1889 is a scarce issue in any Uncirculated grade and a date that becomes very rare in properly graded MS63. For most collectors, a nice MS62 hits the “sweet spot” due to the difference in price between this grade and an MS63 (Trends jumps to $16,500 in this grade).

This is a very choice coin for the grade with strong claims to an MS63. It shows beautiful rich natural orange-gold, rose and greenish hues with some darker highlights giving it a two-tone appearance. The luster is frosty in texture and there are just a few minor marks in the left obverse field that limit the grade.

Here is a coin that makes a lot of sense to me, value-wise, if you are a serious collector of Type Three double eagles.

CAC has approved five in this grade with only one example (an MS63) graded higher.
